This is one of my dad’s favorite stews/ kootu. I learnt this recipe from my mom and it’s very easy to make (even on weekdays !!!). Aashu dislikes dry curries and likes to have dal/kootu/sambar everyday. So, I replace dal/ rasam with kootu some days. This goes well with both rotis and rice (Just love the tangy lemon taste in it !!!). Try out this simple yet tasty recipe!!!

Preparation Time:  30 minutes
No of Servings: 4

Ingredients:

Cabbage: 2 cups
Moong dal: 1 cup
Lemon: 1 -2 (as per taste)
Salt: as per taste
Turmeric: Pinch

For Tempering:

Oil: 1 tbsp.
Cumin Seeds: 1 tsp
Mustard Seeds: 1 tsp
Asafoetida: Pinch
Curry Leaves: few

To Grind

Coconut:  ½ cup
Cumin Seeds: 1 tbsp.
Coriander Seeds / Dhania: 2 tbsp.
Green Chilies – 2
Water- little

Method:

  • Cut cabbage, wash it and cook it in pressure cooker along with moong dal and turmeric.

  • Meanwhile, make a fine paste of Cumin Seeds, Coriander Seeds, Green Chilies and Coconut.

  • Transfer the cooked cabbage and dal to a vessel.
  • Add ground paste to it.
  • Add little water and adjust the consistency.
  • Add salt and let it boil for 5 – 7 minutes on medium flame.

  • Heat a pan with a 1 tbsp of oil.
  • Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, asafoetida and curry leaves to it. When they start to splutter, turn off the stove and transfer the tempering to kootu.
  • Finally, squeeze a lemon (I usually squeeze 2 but you can adjust it to your taste) to the kootu and mix it well.
  • Serve it with rice or rotis.
